Flora and Fauna - Northbridge

The only thing I was sure of before I arrived at Flora and Fauna was that there would be fruit. It was the thought of fruity goodness to cool me down on a warm Spring day that I decided to stroll down William Street in search of their little café. Google Maps was just a tad confusing but I did manage to find it eventually, tucked down a little faux laneway off Aberdeen Street behind Varsity Burgers.

As it was almost midday and the sun was quite strong, I was glad to see that many of their tables were shaded with trees and spread far apart so I wouldn’t be cramming my pram in between diners. The café itself is small with enough room to order at the counter but the ample space outside more than makes up for it.

The friendly staff promptly took my order and I gathered a few magazines to relax in the sunshine at their white tables with mismatched chairs. For a tired mum running errands with a dozing baby along for the ride, that is my idea of bliss. The food was served promptly – I ordered a Banana Bread meal and Pink Flamingo Juice.

The banana bread itself was a massive serving, moist and flavoursome and made even more satisfying with the berry sauce alongside it. There was the option of Nutella but I declined, trying my mightiest to stick to my ‘low sugar’ diet. Yes, I’m surviving and my taste buds are thanking me for it. The medley of fruit served was delicious and fresh, I hadn’t had dragonfruit in ages so it was a delight to have some on the plate. I sipped my juice while tunes played through the air, relaxing in the sun.

The Pink Flamingo, made up of pink grapefruit, pear, beetroot and acai, had an unpredictable taste – it’s mild at the first sip and heavy with beetroot when you put the glass down. It’s a light drink but I found myself unable to finish the whole glass after scoffing a smorgasbord of fruit and cake.

As summer approaches, I imagine the unshaded tables will be a horror to sit in but my time at Flora and Fauna was delightful and relaxing. After leaving, I came to realise I’d just eaten vegan cake – something I probably wouldn’t have tried had I had my whole wits about me but I’m glad I did. It was amazing and now I’m eager to try my hand at some recipes at home. I’ll definitely be going back for seconds though.
